“Techno Dreams” navigates the fluid boundaries between speculative sci-fi and the heavy residue of history, presenting examples of Technocriticism as well as Southeast Asian Tropical Futurism that challenge the linearity of progress. Here, the screen functions as both mirror and mirage; the works interrogate how the technologies of image-making construct our perception of reality, often obscuring the marginalized histories they claim to document. By weaving together myth, digital glitch, and archival memory, the program confronts the alienation of the algorithmic age and the "objective truths" of neo-colonial systems, asking whether the very images that imprison us might also hold the keys to our liberation.
The films traverse a landscape where the ancient and the hyper-modern collide. Andrew Thomas Huang and Thaweechok Phasom reclaim the transformative power of myth, using folklore to navigate the displacement of the body and the soul. This resistance echoes in the works of Teo Wey Yinn and Lin Htet Aung, who excavate the scars of colonialism and military dictatorship, revealing the endurance of culture against erasure. Finally, the friction between nature and capital explodes in the narratives of Yihan Lin and Naween Noppakun, where the glitching cityscapes of the future and the vanished illusions of the fashion world expose the fragility of our constructed realities.
